Born in Melbourne, Rabbi Raymond Apple was Australia’s highest profile rabbi for many years. He has degrees in arts, law, history, religion and education and is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Sydney and a Doctor of Laws of the University of New South Wales. After ministering to London synagogues at Bayswater and Hampstead, he was senior rabbi of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, for thirty-two years, retiring in January 2005.

He has written widely on Jewish history and continues to reach thousands though his weekly Oz Torah. He and his wife Marian now live in Israel; they have four adult children and a number of grandchildren.

Rabbi Apple says, “This book is about me but it is not an autobiography. It delves into and reflects on many of the issues, concerns and activities in which I have been involved over the years, and illustrates the wide range of responsibilities that confront a busy religious leader. Because my career spanned three countries, it inevitably touches on aspects of Australian, British and Jewish history. I have enjoyed writing it; I hope it gives like pleasure to my readers.”
